SILVICULTURE

Silviculture pertains to the establishment, development, care and reproduction of forest crops. The objectives of Silviculture studies are :

The goal of this division is to evolve Silvicultural knowledge on indigenous species and thereby support the mass afforestation progrrammes and ensure the successful plantation activities. Progress in this direction are :

Under Silviculture division 6 (six) nos. of Research Ranges in different locations have been established viz. Dirang, Tipi, Chessa, Itanagar and Namsai. Of these Research Ranges, Chessa, Itanagar and Tipi are situated along the Semi evergreen type of forests and can study such species characteristic of this forest. The Research Range , Namsai is situated in the wet evergreen Dipterocarpus forests which is located in South Bank. To study the high altitude forestry problems, a Range is functioning at Dirang. These Research Ranges undertake and assist Silvicultureal and other Research Progress of all the scientific divisions of the Institute.

Clonal Seed Orchards : Two clonal seed orchards have been established one at Chessa and the other at Namsai for raising quality seeds of forestry species.

Under Van Vigyan Kendra, Chessa, the clonal seed orchards of 12 species have been established they are:

Under Namsai Range, Namsai, clonal seed orchards of 9 species have been established with the following species:

Preservation plots

The seven preservation plots under the Silviculture Division have been maintained under different range and time to time the plots are being visited at least twice a year. Following tables provide the details of the preservation plots.
